Empower people with Direct Cash Transfers
Directly transferring money to poor individuals empowers them to purchase whatever they believe will help them most. Strong evidence indicates that recipients know their own situation best and generally invest in things that make them happier in the long term. There are eleven randomized controlled trials supporting cash transfers’ impact. (1) Read a detailed Givewell review or our accessible summary to learn more.

Stop malaria before it starts with Bednets
Malaria is a terrible disease and one of the world's biggest killers of children under 5. Thankfully, a $6 bednet can stop a malaria-carrying mosquito from infecting children while they sleep. There are many randomized controlled trials suggesting that this is one the most cost effective and proven ways to save a life. Read a detailed Givewell review or our accessible summary to learn more.

Send kids to school with Deworming
Deworming is the most cost-effective way to increase school attendance because the effects of parasitic worms (such as anemia) can make it difficult for an infected child to go to school. These worms can be treated for around a dollar per year. There are 14 randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials supporting deworming's impact and cost effectiveness. Increase the world's IQ with Salt Fortification
Fortifying salt with iodine can increase the IQ of millions of people. There is strong evidence that this fortified salt boosts health and cognitive development in those who are iodine-deficient. Iodine deficiency causes pervasive mental impairment, as well as stillbirth and congenital abnormalities such as severe retardation. Salt fortification can be done very cheaply on a mass scale, so it is highly cost-effective.

Broadcast Health Education over the radio waves
Sometimes all that is needed to save lives is education. Radio and television broadcasts in developing countries can be highly effective for teaching people about improved health practices. This can save lives, especially those of young children. A randomized controlled trial has found promising indications of a large decrease in children's deaths resulting from radio and television-based interventions.

Living Goods brings badly needed health supplies to the poor
Many communities in the developing world do not have access to basic goods and heath supplies. Donations can help make these goods more accessible by creating a network of people selling needed health and household goods door-to-door. A randomized controlled trial suggested that this intervention caused a 25% reduction in under-5 mortality.
