Scientifically backed causes

Our proven charities are supported by a large body of high quality research that includes everything from randomized control studies to independent research. They:
  • Are evidence-based
  • Help the most people for your dollar
  • Help the global poor
Our top three areas are listed below, but you can learn about more other areas here.

Tax Benefits

As a registered foundation, we are happy to offer tax benefits to Canadian donors who wish to donate to some of the world's most effective charities!

Not Canadian? Further questions? We have global partners and can probably help you out! Email us with any questions or for more information.

Empower people with cash transfers

Directly transferring money to poor individuals empowers them to purchase whatever they believe will help them most. Strong evidence indicates that recipients know their own situation best and generally invest in things that make them happier in the long term. There are eleven randomized controlled trials supporting cash transfers’ impact. (1) Read a detailed GiveWell review or our accessible summary to learn more.

Save childrens' lives with bednets

_Malaria is a terrible disease and one of the world's biggest killers of children under 5. Thankfully, a $6 bednet can stop a malaria-carrying mosquito from infecting children while they sleep. There are many randomized controlled trials suggesting that this is one of the most cost-effective and proven ways to save a life. Send a kid to school with deworming

Deworming is the most cost-effective way to increase school attendance because the effects of parasitic worms (such as anemia) can make it difficult for an infected child to go to school. These worms can be treated for under a dollar. There are 14 randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials supporting deworming's impact and cost effectiveness. Learn more about Charity Scientists

There is a lot to learn. We have laid out the most important information on the pages below (in rough order of a good way to read them). Possibly the best way to learn more is to sign up for our monthly newsletter which is full of information on our top charities, research and all sorts of other interesting information. Alternatively you can click on the icons below.
Why Scientifically proven?
Science consistently beats intuition. Test it out yourself with this game where you guess which charities work, which don't, and which actually cause harm.
How are these areas chosen?
We use the most reliable form of experiments known as randomized controlled trials. These allow you to see if an intervention is effective compared to if it had not been done.
What are Charity Scientists?
Charity scientists are people who want to revolutionize doing good the same way that science revolutionized medicine. They don't support whatever charity shows up at their door. They think strategically about which to support, back the ones that are scientifically proven and help the most people.
Other Charity Scientists
The individuals and organizations listed on this page are outstanding examples of what we feel a charity scientist is. The list includes both individuals and organizations.
